Erin Romney reopened her wellness center in a completely renovated Magazine Street building in 2006, and the updated design is striking: recycled resin wall panels, cork flooring, a bamboo-garden lounge, and a bevy of the latest Pilates and exercize equipment. Natural Awakenings - Fitness Gets Greener - Pilates Expert Realizes Her Dream Studio
When Erin Romney decided to open her own Pilates studio, she dreamed of a soothing retreat from the world. Little did she know that her small studio would provide an oasis of calm and connection in the months after Hurricane Katrina enabling her to open a bigger, "greener" studio, Romney Pilates Center, just over a year later.

The care and consideration Romney put into the decor of her studio demonstrate that it is possible for design to be both sustainable and stylish. The light airy interior features bamboo and cork flooring, both of which are environmentally friendly flooring choices because the plants re-grow very quickly. She also chose soy-based stains for the concrete and VOC paint for the walls. The exercise mats are made with recycled materials.

"It was something I've always wanted to do and the opportunity came up," she says modestly, downplaying the role her business acumen has played in her success. "I had a lot of fun with this."

Pilates Style - Shelter from the Storm - A New Orleans Studio Goes Greener
"Meanwhile, three of my instructors and my massage therapist had moved back to New Orleans. They had the keys to the studio, so I encouraged them to put some flowers outside, set up shop and let people know we were open. Knowing that people were going home, I wanted to be there too. People you work and train with become like family. There's an intimacy with Pilates; you learn a lot about a person physically and emotionally without their saying a lot, with how they hold themselves or grip certain areas of their body.

Pilates Style - How Green Is My Studio
When Erin Romney, owner of Romney Pilates in New Orleans, had the opportunity to move into a bigger space, she jumped at the chance to do a healthy renovation. " I wanted to do it right," she says. She started from the ground up, with iFloor, and eco-conscious company that provided bamboo and cork-both sustainable alternatives-for the exercise floors and a partially recycled material called Plynyl for the hallways and other high-traffic areas.

New Orleans Magazine - Join the Green Revolution
Likewise, Pilates instructor Erin Romney incorporated several green elements in the remodeling of her Magazine Street studio by installing cork and bamboo flooring and rugs woven from recycled fibers, and by using non-toxic paints and stains for finishes. Most of the materials were no more expensive than traditional ones, Romney says. "I wanted to show people that it doesn't have to look awful to be eco-friendly," she says. "It can look very chic, and at the same time, it's safer for people and the environment."

Gambit Weekly - Best of New Orleans - 40 Under 40
The prospect of caring for sea creatures at the Aquarium of the Americas originally drew Erin Romney to New Orleans five years ago, but it turns out she found her real niche helping people take better care of themselves. Along the way, she built a fast-growing health, fitness and wellness business at her Pilates Center on Magazine Street.
